Portadown Town Centre Regeneration

Closed 28 Apr 2021

Opened 14 Apr 2021

Overview

Portadown Town Centre is continually evolving and Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon Borough Council would like to introduce a vibrant Town Centre Market and Gateway Enhancement Project that will enhance, complement and develop current and future investments.

Council would like to gather the thoughts and opinions of the business community, residents and the wider public on the provision of a Town Centre Market located at the bottom section of Magowan West Car Park (at Woodhouse Street) and a Gateway Enhancement Project for the arrival into the town centre from Portadown Train Station, Woodhouse Street and Obins Street.

Why your views matter

Portadown Town Centre is historically a great market town with an exceptional transport network, with vehicle and pedestrian access, car parks, train station and bus terminals all easily accessible to a vast array of quality shops.

The town has benefited from substantial investment by way of capital works programmes such as, public realm works, refurbishment of the train station and shopping centres. It is envisaged the Town Centre Market proposal at Magowan West Car Park and the Gateway Enhancement Project will play a key part in rejuvenating the town centre.

We are actively seeking your feedback on the provision of a Town Centre Market and Gateway Enhancement Project in Portadown Town Centre.   The response from this public consultation will help to inform decision-making regarding the regeneration of Portadown.

The survey should take no more than 10 minutes to complete and will provide the business community, residents and the wider community an opportunity to express their views. We value your input.

Please see attached map showing the proposed location of the Town Centre Market at the bottom section of Magowan West Car Park.

Key Areas

The consultation will ask for opinions in 2 key areas

  1. Provision of a Town Centre Market at Magowan West Car Park
Council are currently exploring the possibility of a town centre market provision in Portadown. The market would be held twice weekly and on other special days/bank holidays throughout the year. It would be located at the bottom half of Magowan West Car Park adjacent to the High Street Mall.  Should a market be held at Magowan West Car Park, this would mean the suspension of 75-100 car parking spaces on market days in this bottom section.  Please note the top section of Magowan West Car Park will remain open as normal with alternative car parking available in the following nearby car parks – High Street Mall Multi-Storey, Train Station, Peoples Park, William Street and Fairgreen and on street car parking.

  2. Gateway Enhancement Project from Portadown Train Station, Woodhouse Street and Obins Street to the town centre.
Proposals are being developed to create an attractive and welcoming gateway environment for residents, businesses and tourists arriving into and walking around to Portadown. The proposals would be focused on improvements to the pedestrian environment from the junction of Woodhouse Street and Obins Street across the Magowan West Car Park.
